Yesterday, when I started the first drawing of a hand holding a balloon I abandoned it immediately, because I realized it was positioned in the wrong place. It was obvious that I needed to start again with a fresh piece of paper.
This morning, searching for an idea, the false start from yesterday jumped out at me and became the idea for today’s daily doodle. As I imagined what the image should be, the words took shape first – “Picking up a false start and running with it.” I was excited to come up with this idea. I signed the paper in the usual spot in the bottom right hand corner and scanned it into my computer. It appeared upside down on the screen, but that’s when it became clear what the image should be.
I clearly saw that the line should be the tail of a kite. It made perfect sense for the image and words. Sometimes you have to turn something upside down to get the right perspective. This is something Zendictive has written about and drawn in his Etegami. It happened quite literally here, as you can see from the position of my signature in the final drawing.

wonderful (~~)I remember making kites as a kid, now a day, they are easily bought and so many different styles… the old news paper triangle as you drew is what we made…
thanks for the post and the memories(~_~)

Hi Art, I saw some kites flying this past weekend in several styles. They’re very fancy now, but when I think of kites, my mind goes to the old fashioned ones. Thanks for the feedback and inspiration from your blog and Etegami!

Honestly, you’ve kind of lost me with today’s post, Tim. I guess my mind is just a little foggy today and I am not processing things as usual. I am going to revisit your post again later today to see if it will come to me then. In the meantime, your kites remind me of simpler times when my son was very young and his kite was a source of entertainment for us. Wish I could have some of those times back again.

Hi Bonnie, Please let me know if the post makes more sense when you revisit it. Maybe I was just thinking a little upside down this morning! This post is about how a solution to a problem can become clear if you look at your problem from a different perspective. In this case, a line that I had drawn in the wrong place for one drawing became the perfect line to begin a completely new drawing – once I turned the page upside down. I hope that’s not too confusing!

Now I get it, Tim … it wasn’t your drawing or post, it was just me. And you are so right that sometimes looking at things from a different perspective can be just the answer you were looking for.

This sketch is so cute. I love it. I am be odd but my favorite thing about it is that your name is upside down. lol I love when odd stuff like that happens. I may do it on purpose on my next project. 🙂 Have a great day.

Hi Laurie, At first, I almost scrapped the idea, because my signature was upside down, but then I embraced it as part of the post. It’s fun when things like that happen!

Totally got your concept today. Right on point. You can never make mistakes with art. I always keep mine in a stash and come back to it when I need inspiration. TFS

Hi Jessica, I think it’s interesting to go back to something that seemed like a mistake at the time and try to make it work.

Hi Kate, Glad to hear that – it’s the best when that happens. Sometimes those challenges turn out to be the best opportunities!

Great! I remember watching my dad make these huge box kites at the park. I guess it was a hobby a few dads got together to do. I think it was more for them then it was for us. But is was fun. It took 3 of us kids to try and hold up one, of course with dads help. LOL. TFS.

Hi Diana, I remember as a kid that I wasn’t a very good kite starter – but I do remember holding the string with one of them in the air, and it was fun.

Hi Tim,
I just discovered you’re blogging! Great to see you here in the ‘sphere.
Ya know what, I often find I draw parts & piece by turning my sketchbook upside down or viewing the overall composition upside down…perhaps a not so strange after all concept. I thought maybe it’s just because I’m left handed. LOVE your doodles. I’ve been playing (and blogging about them too).
Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Terri, It’s great to hear from you. I’ve jumped head first into the bloggerverse! Sometimes I flop my sketches in Photoshop, because I have astigmatism in one eye and it tends to skew my drawings in a weird way.
Thanks for sending that person to me who was looking for my work a few months ago.
I have to say you have a beautiful blog. Thanks so much for visiting.
Happy Thanksgiving!
