I decided to create a doodle last night to get a jump start on today’s post, but I just couldn’t seem to get an idea.
The sailboats I saw on Lake Massabesic, New Hampshire the other day inspired this concept, but unlike them, my sailboat didn’t have any wind in its sails. I felt like I was drifting in the creative doldrums.
Inspiration is something that doesn’t happen automatically, and I can’t always wait for it. Sometimes I just have to put my back into it and make it happen. So, I created a post about struggling to come up with an idea.
Tim, You are an inspiration!
Hi Marilyn, Thank You – it’s so nice to hear that!
Tim
very poignant! Love it =)
Hi Dana, Thanks for the feedback.
Tim
These two drawing really speak to me. It reminds me of the song “wade in the water”,sometimes we need to take a deep breathe and dive in
Hi Bridget, “Take a deep breath and dive in” – that is true!
Tim
I must say this one gave me a laugh, I’ve been there myself. Actually I’ve had to break out the oars myself this week. Take care, ~Debra
Hi Debra, I’m glad this made you laugh – that comment made me smile. It happens to me all the time!

I love these sketches. Sometimes when there is no wind in my sails it may be that I’m meant to notice something around me that I might have missed if I had sailed on by. 🙂
Hi Laurie, That’s a very good point, I hadn’t thought of it that way. I will think of that the next time I’m having a hard time coming up with an idea, which probably won’t be long!
Tim
I so appreciate this post, as I’ve felt a similar ‘lack’ of inspiration for writing posts. You’ve created a great approach, to just move through it rather than get stuck IN it. Love this. xo
Hi Jackie, Yes, moving through it is a good way to express it. I think getting stuck in it happens when I let the frustration set in. It’s a matter of grabbing onto something – in this case, a sailboat and an oar – and working through it.
Tim
I often feel like your sailboat with no wind but don’t always have the desire to break out the oars. Eventually, inspiration appears and you carry on…that’s where I am thankful for your blog, Tim. You have provided me with a lot of inspiration since you began posting.
Hi Bonnie, It’s great to hear that. I know it can be a nice thing to just drift and enjoy the view without breaking out the oars.
Thanks for that thought!
Tim
Tim, I really like this drawing. It’s poignant as to how I feel a bit of the time.
Hi Lorraine,
Thanks for letting me know you can relate! I think it’s just part of the creative process.
Tim
Isn’t that like us sometimes? Sitting here waiting for the wind to come? TFS! Have a great day.
Hi Diana, Yes, but I can’t wait for the wind sometimes, and I have to get my oars out!
Tim
It turned out well!
Thanks for the feedback!
Tim
I love the “waiting for a 2nd wind”…lol…I could identify with that one!
Hi Sue,
Thanks for the feedback!
Tim
That’s a really motivating little 2-pic-story you drew!
I think this will become my new motto at work:
Don’t give up when there’s no wind but when you can do something then do it – get the oars and don’t just sit there waiting for the wind.
Thanks a lot for this “nudge”!
Hi Tina, That would be a great motto to have, and it’s something I aspire to. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Tim
I think anything worth having is worth the struggle it takes to make it happen. Your thoughts are awesome. Thanks.
Hi Mariasgrandma, That’s very true!
