Last evening, I was thinking about making a short holiday greeting video for Youtube, but the challenge is how to come up with holiday music that doesn’t violate copyright. That made me ask the question, what if I write my own music?
So, I started to write my own song lyrics. I turned to some of the posts I’ve written for this blog for inspiration. It wasn’t quite a holiday song that began to form. Many years ago, I helped someone write a song, but this is the first time I’m trying to write a whole song and record it myself. It’s a little too ambitious to finish it this year in time for a holiday greeting, but maybe it can become an ongoing project for 2012. A new challenge for the new year.
The lyrics and structure probably need work, but here’s the first draft of the lyrics—
Share the Light from Inside
Lyrics by Tim Coffey
When it’s dark and it’s cold and the stars are inked out
And someone with the power has turned your lights out
When you feel numb from a pain too deep
Pain thrives when it feels alone
When you’ve lost your way in the darkness
Alone, you’re tangled up in a forest
When you suffer from a pain too deep
Hope thrives when it’s not alone
Everyone has one light
One light
Share the light from inside
Call me and we’ll meet in the forest
Untangling, untangling
And when you call, we’ll dig through the darkness
Digging, digging to find your light
Everyone has one light
One light
Share the light from inside
When I’ve lost my way, and it’s cold outside
When I feel numb from a pain too deep
Hope thrives when it’s with someone
When I’ve lost my way, and it’s cold outside
When I feel numb from a pain too deep
Hope thrives when it’s with someone
Everyone has one light
One light
Share the light from inside
Tim,
I have been grappling with the same problem and turned to my husband for help. He is writing a little into piece for me to use in my videos. I can’t wait to hear yous!
🙂 Natasha
Hi Natasha, That’s great you were able to find help with creating intro music. You can also buy royalty free music clips online that you can use in your videos. But if you want to keep changing the music, it can get expensive!
Tim
I just have to say that I love your sketch of the star, it goes really well with the lyrics of your song as well, I’m going to have a look at your other doodles now.
Thanks for the feedback! And thanks for checking out the doodles!
Tim
Hey Tim, You are just so inspiring! What sort of melody was playing in your head while writing this? I’m sure you know someone close by to help with that part. I believe this could be your first song at Studio 99. 😀 Thanks for sharing! ~Lisa
Hi Lisa, The melody and rhythm are very vague at this point. I think the chorus needs to be higher than the intro – maybe minor chords that swell into major chords? Am I showing that I know absolutely nothing about writing music yet?
It would be so much fun to hear this performed at Studio 99 someday!
Tim
What CAN’T you do, Mr. Tim Coffey?!!
Hi Bonnie, I’m not very good at sports – and lots of other things! Thanks for the compliment!
Tim :0)
Very nice. You are right we all have a light inside us and we really have to work to keep it shining brightly so we can help others find their way in the darkness.
Hi Deborah, This blog has been a source of a lot of ideas for me. I think the daily blogging has really helped me to tap into a facet of creativity that I wasn’t aware I had.
Tim
What beautiful lyrics!! Bravo! 🙂
Hi Rita, So glad you like them. It will be fun to see if this can turn into an actual song with a melody. This will be a long term project to see if I can pull it together!
Tim
I appreciate and enjoy your multi-talent. Thanks for sharing with us.
Hi Judy, Thanks so much for the positive feedback!
Tim
wonderful (~_~) reminded me of my brother who always gets the kids to sing, “this little light of mine”
When I’ve lost my way, and it’s cold outside
When I feel numb from a pain too deep
Hope thrives when it’s with someone
deeply moving (~_~)
Hi Art, Thank you for letting me know this connected with you. I hope I’m able to turn it into a finished piece that could actually be performed. It will take time.
Tim
An artist and songwriter – a great combination! Very nice!
Hi Fergie, It’s sort of a first attempt, so time will tell if it actually turns into a finished song that’s worthy of being performed.
Thanks,
Tim
WOW, a “Jack of all trades” Artist. Very good! TFS
