As hurricane Irene approaches, I had the urge to draw something sunny. The yellow coneflowers are in bloom, and they inspired this drawing.
It takes some effort for flowers to lean toward the sunshine. I have this theory that if we studied plants closely enough and could understand why they behave the way they do, we might discover they have emotions just as deep and strong as people. They do not possess the ability or desire to communicate the way humans do, but they know how to get what they need from their environment to survive. There must be some sort of survival instinct and motivation for them to lean toward the sun beyond simple chemical processes. I hope the flowers in bloom survive the hurricane this weekend!
I hope they survive too. Flowers are so vital to our world and so many animals rely on flowers. I love the colors that flowers provide us and I would feel so empty if we did not have all the colors to visually stimulate us. Love your drawing! I made one at work yesterday, but I forgot it there. I will post tonight. Mine just happen to be a flower too!

Hi Sharon, Thanks so much for commenting. I’m not looking forward to this hurricane, but I’m definitely looking forward to seeing your drawing.

What a beautiful sentiment, and well said too. I think everything has deeper feelings than we know. There’s a beautiful novel on elephants told from their point of view called “The White Bone” as scientifically elephants are known to grieve deeply when one of their clan dies.
I love the drawing too, very graceful which matches the mood of what you’re saying : )
Take care,
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth, It’s good to hear from you. Thanks for the novel suggestion “The White Bone” – I’m going to check that out.

Tim, this is nice! I hate to say this…but I want this one. AWESOME! TFS.
Thanks! That’s a huge compliment!

I agree, there is so much more to nature than we can understand. Flowers are the sunshine part of nature… by just ‘being there’ they give us so much happiness. For me it is the beauty and silence that holds the strength. Your drawing captures this so well. I like the squiggle in the stems and leaves… as an emphasis on strength đŸ™‚

Hi Caroline,
Somehow, I failed to reply to your comment until now. Thank you for your thoughts – I think the same can be said for people.
